DUBUQUE, Iowa – The City of Dubuque Historic Preservation Commission has made available online Dubuque city directories from 1856-1991, thanks to funding provided by the Dubuque Old House Enthusiast Club and a Historical Resource Development Program Grant from the State Historical Society of Iowa.

City directories are bound volumes that list businesses and residences organized by year. The directories provide information on home address, work address, occupation, spouse, and children of residents. They note addresses and provide advertisements and photos of businesses. Additionally, they provide sections on churches, cemeteries, hospitals, schools, and organizations such as clubs and societies.

Previously, the city directories were only available in bound and microfilm format at the Carnegie-Stout Public Library. Now, the online versions provide 24-hour access and the ability to keyword search all the directories, which can help locate information faster.

The directories are used often by genealogists to research family histories, historic preservation consultants to research former occupants or businesses at a given address, or by anyone who wants to find where ancestors used to live.

The city directories can be accessed by clicking on the research tools link on the Carnegie- Stout Public Library webpage at , through the useful links on the City of Dubuque Historic Preservation webpage at , or by accessing the City of Dubuque Archive by Advantage Preservation.
