Advantage Community History Archive:

Old area newspapers to be digitized (Ohio)

The Mansfield News Journal of Mansfield, Ohio published an article on an Advantage Preservation project last week as local organization worked together with one goal, to provide access to the areas historic newspapers.

The Mansfield Memorial Museum, in cooperation with the Mansfield-Richland County Public Library, the Richland County chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society and the Ohio Genealogical Society, is digitizing a total of 51 microfilm reels of 17 early newspapers from Mansfield, Butler and Bellville, from 1823 to 1922.

The microfilm has been sent to Advantage in Iowa where it will be digitized and made available online. Newspaper titles that will placed on the library’s website include the Mansfield Gazette, Bellville Messenger, Butler Enterprise, Richland Shield and Banner and the Ohio Liberal.

Scott Schaut, curator of the Mansfield Memorial Museum, said “This is the first time that people can access these old newspapers without microfilm or online newspapers by subscription. This is a gift from our organizations to this community.”

The organizations involved in this project share the same mission as Advantage, to connect the community to their history and ensure that documents from the past are accessible in the present, and available in the future.
