Tutorial – Using Advanced Search
After you have selected the “Advanced Search” link, you will be presented with the Advanced Search screen
Let’s go through each entry box, line by line:
Advanced Search – Search By Name
Here you can enter a first name, or a last name, or both.
Advanced Search – Search for Pages With an Exact Word or Phrase
If you enter more than one word, this entry functions the same as if you are entering a phrase search. Any page that has at least one occurrence of all the words entered, in order, separated by a space would return results with that phrase in them.
Advanced Search – Search for Pages With All These Words
In this box you enter all the words that must appear on the same page so that page will be returned in the search results. They can be separated by a space or a comma. This functions exactly like a Boolean AND. So, if you entered word1 word2 word3, that functions exactly like word1 AND word2 AND word3.
Advanced Search – Search for Pages With Any of These Words
In this box you enter all of the words that must appear on any page. All of the words do not have to appear on the same page. They can be separated by a space or a comma. This functions exactly like a Boolean OR. So, if you entered word1 word2 word3, that functions exactly like word1 OR word2 OR word3.
Advanced Search – Search for Pages With None of These Words
In this box you enter all of the words that do not appear on pages. You must have entered a search that includes “Last Name”, or “Exact Word or Phrase”, or “All of These Words”, or “Any of These Words”. A simple example would be that you are looking for someone with a Last Name of “Lincoln” but you don’t want any pages that have the word “Gettsburg”. In that case, you would enter the word Gettsburg in the None of These Words box. This functions exactly like a Boolean NOT. So, for our example it would be “NOT Gettysburg”.
Advanced Search – Narrow Your Results
You have the option of limiting your search results to City and Publication Title. These two boxes are drop downs, so after you have selected “City”, the software will return all of the publication titles for that city and you then can select a specific publication title if you wish. You can also enter a Date Range. Just select the dates of interest by using the Start Date and End Date. The calendar will lead you through selection of a Decade, then the Year, followed by the Month and Day.
