Institutional History
MISD holds a distinguished place in Iowa’s educational history. Formed in 1860, it stands as the fourth-oldest school district in the state. In 1872, Marion graduated its first class of three women, who later held the first class reunion in 1877.
The Marion Alumni Association, established in 1879, was the first high-school alumni association registered in Iowa—a tradition that remains active today. Decades later, the Marion School Foundation was established in 1989, supporting innovation through grants, scholarships, and classroom resources.
Preservation efforts, including digitization of yearbooks (from 1918 onward) and class composites (1893–1924), were supported by the Linn County Historic Preservation Grant Program and the State Historical Society of Iowa.
Town & Community Context
Marion, Iowa, incorporated in 1837, once served as the county seat of Linn County until 1919, when the honor shifted to Cedar Rapids. Today, Marion is one of Iowa’s fastest-growing communities, home to over 41,500 residents as of the 2020 census.
The city, named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, features cultural and historical landmarks such as:
- Granger House – an Italianate Victorian home (c. 1860) now serving as a museum.
